The Sin You Keep Going Back To

Breaking a private pattern you are tired of confessing.

Relevant Passages

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape.

1 Corinthians 10:13 (ESV)

Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.

James 5:16 (NIV)

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

Romans 8:1 (ESV)

Historical Context

Corinth was a port city saturated with temple prostitution and public excess; Paul's readers were not theorizing about temptation. The "way of escape" (ekbasis) was a military term for a mountain pass allowing a trapped army to get out — a concrete route, not a feeling of willpower.

Explanation

Two truths hold together here. You are not uniquely broken — the struggle is common to man. And you are not condemned — Romans 8 settles your standing before your progress does. Notice also that James places healing in the context of confession to another person; secrecy is the environment a habit needs to survive.

Practical Application

Identify the actual doorway — the hour, the device, the mood, the room. Change one physical condition this week rather than relying on resolve. Then tell one mature believer the truth and give them permission to ask you about it weekly. The way of escape is usually a plan and a person, not a burst of willpower.

Reflection Questions

  1. 1What conditions reliably precede my failure?
  2. 2Who could know the truth about this and still love me?
  3. 3Do I believe there is no condemnation for me right now, today?

A Closing Prayer

Father, You already know what I have hidden. I am tired of the cycle and tired of my own promises. Show me the way of escape and give me the courage to take it before I am cornered. Thank You that there is no condemnation for me in Christ — let that truth do what my shame never could. Amen.
